Wednesday 9th July 2014

We didn't plan to travel far today as we spent the morning visiting Braunston and popping into the excellent butchers. It is a shame a good bakers didn't manage to survive but it closed in 1999.

Another interesting shop can be found at the bottom lock. It is called The Boat shop as it initially started on a boat. The lady cooks homemade bread but there was none ready when we were there.

We encountered our first double width locks of the holiday and my are they hard to push open! I'm fairly confident steering into narrow locks but these are a different matter and the wind had picked up a little. Graham was steering and I did the 6 locks although we managed to go up as a pair which was good.

Then it was through the Braunston tunnel. Unlike when it opened there was no band and waving crowds!

The tunnel was much drier and warmer than we expected it to be and we only had to pass one boat coming the opposite way.

We moored just before Norton Junction and walked along to see the locks we will pass through tomorrow before picking up Chris and Alan at Long Buckby Wharf.

We popped into a pub at the first lock to see if they had wifi (no!) and saw this strange skittle type game. Anyone know what it is?

  1. Hi, good to meet you today. The game is called Northampton Skittles and played by throwing the disk underhand only to knock the skittles over but I don’t know any of the rules. You’ll find these in lots of pubs round Braunston, Stoke Bruerne etc.. Have fun on the Thames.
    Carol.
