Friday 5th July

A beautiful day weather wise with sunshine all day and very warm. Even the cows found it too hot!

As we have travelled this route before there are many sentences which begin with "Do you remember?" or " That house was for sale last year........Oh, it still is!" It is lovely to see the gardens which have been so carefully tended sweeping down to the canal. Even houses with very small gardens make an effort and at the moment they are looking lovely.

At Great Haywood we passed Shugborough Hall which was the ancestral home of the Earls of Lichfield. The house was bought by a lawyer called Anson. The packhorse bridge below was the route which the family walked to church (300yds)

Unfortunately they found the walk too strenuous so an iron bridge was built so that the horse and carriage could be used as the packhorse bridge was too narrow to accommodate this!

At Aston lock, just before Stone, we passed the half way milepost of the Trent and Mersey Canal. We are heading for Preston Brook but will detour up the Caldon Canal and also have a quick trip home so it will take us quite a while to cover the 46miles.

So, tonight we are in Stone and have just watched Andy Murray reach the Wimbledon final. Sunday's cruise will have to end at 2pm!
