Tuesday 10th July 2018

We woke to a cloudy morning! How unusual is that? It was also quite cool so we needed a fleece for the first few hours.
We walked up to Woodford which has a lovely place name board.

There had been a weekend of fun for the village as the fun fair was still packing up on the village green and the church had the flowers in place from the recent flower festival where the theme had been happiness. The view over part of the village and countryside was lovely and it reminds us that some parts of England still seem miles from anywhere although major roads are quite near.

We have read that Northamptonshire is the county of ‘Squires and Spires’. We have certainly passed some very nice houses, although I’m not sure that all of them are occupied, and you can see many spires as we sail along. Not sure whether Northamptonshire is full of religious people or sinners who need the churches in order to repent of their sins!

We shared some locks with a day boat whose owner was taking friends out for the day. They wanted to do the locks so we had the rare pleasure of riding through together. Here is one of the guillotine gates taken from inside the lock.

Just after one of the locks an Archimedes Screw was in place to try to remove some of the gravel from the bottom of the river as there had been a bank collapse.

We are moored just outside Oundle Marina on land belonging to Oundle Cruising Club. For a donation you can moor here overnight and walk through the Marina to the road in order to walk into Oundle which we shall do in the morning.
