Sunday 18th June 2017

A day in Leeds. Boiling hot temperatures again. We are moored very close to the railway station and this photo shows the river Aire emerging from under it. You can walk under the station and see the river swirling below under 3 arches. It is like something out of Phantom of the Opera down there.

We took a free river taxi along the route we had boated yesterday back to the Royal Armories Museum. An excellent place showing armour, weapons and the uses of weaponry though the ages from all parts of the world. Rather randomly they were having a Wild West weekend and we watched a talk and demonstration on the art of knife throwing - we didn't realise that there was such a sport!

This is an exhibit of an elephant in full armour!

The river taxi passed under Leeds Bridge and it was from a window next to the bridge that the first moving picture was made of traffic crossing the bridge in 1888 by Louis de Prince. Unfortunately he disappeared in mysterious circumstances 2 years later but is known as the father of the motion picture.

Taken at the museum this photo shows the lock and river which we cruised along on our entry to Leeds yesterday.

We walked to the Tourist Information Office hoping to pick up a Red Bus tour only to find that they no longer exist. Leeds is missing a trick. The guy cited cuts but we know that the guides are usually volunteers on these ventures and we had a great tour of Manchester last year.

We visited the Arcades which are Victorian shopping arcades but not Victorian prices and the number of shops in Leeds seemed phenomenal.

Our last stop was the Corn Exchange. Now more shops but the roof is particularly dramatic. The glass roof faces north. It was built this way so that the light showed the corn and other merchandise to their best advantage.

After a lovely meal out last night we shall frequent the restaurants again tonight before we start the slog up the many locks of the Pennines.
