Monday 1st August 2016

We were awoken just after 6am by gulls walking up and down on the roof squawking! They continued this racket for a long time and then proceeded to wash their beaks in the canal before starting up again! Consequently we were up and dressed and in the shopping centre by just after 8am.

The weather was reasonable so we considered staying in Gloucester for the day and having a look at the cathedral as it is a long time since we have been round it. However Graham went over to talk to the lock keeper as the lady at Avon lock in Tewkesbury had said that leaving Gloucester on Monday would be fine but to check about staying until Tuesday. Apparently there is a high tide tomorrow so we were told to go today. As we didn't fancy fighting our way out of Gloucester on an ebbing high tide, we quickly set to, descended the lock out of the dock basin and made our way up the river against the river flow.

The photo shows the bridge which is across the middle of the lock opening. We are not sure why as none of the boats which emerged were high in the water.

The rain started as soon as we set off. Quite gently but steadily with only small interludes. There is little mooring on the river so we didn't think that we would make Upton upon Severn in good time to find a spot so we are moored at Haw Bridge near Apperley on a pontoon. There were 2 cruisers already here ( and look as if they haven't moved for a while ) so we tucked on the end. A sign says that we have come 9 miles and it took us 3 hours against the flow. Just after we secured the boat the rain started in earnest so we are glad not to be out on the river now.

All the banks are tree lined so you cannot see any views. The guide books say that it is a boring stretch and so far we must agree. We have no phone signal or internet connection and are only 6 miles from Tewkesbury. Let's hope that this rain blows through tonight. It is more like late October than August!

(Postscript - Aug 1st and we have just put the central heating on!)
