We had lunch and then the rain started again so it was about 3pm when we finally got going. It rained quite a lot but we moored at Macclesfield about 4.30 and as the skies had cleared we were able to go into town for a quick look. We are doing a sort of there/and back journey for the next few days as we want to visit various museums in Macclesfield and Bollington but they are not open every day. The distances are not great and we need to run the engine to keep our leisure batteries charged.
Macclesfield looks hilly! We found it strange that the canal is at the top of a hill and the railway at the bottom as canals cannot go uphill very easily and trains can manage better.
Just beside our mooring spot is a convenience store so we did manage to get the paper and tomorrow we may even be able to read it over breakfast. We thought of asking if they delivered but maybe that would be pushing it! There are very few moorings in Macclesfield and the town certainly doesn't seem to encourage visitors from the canal. The shopping centre looked fine and we are going to see the silk museum tomorrow.
Just along from us is the original Hovis Mill where the flour was produced. The company later transferred milling to Manchester but used this site as a print works for packaging and publicity. It is now apartments.
